JACKSON, Miss. – For the third time in its last four outings, the McMurry women's basketball team found the "W" column after its 62-44 American Southwest Conference road victory at Belhaven University. The War Hawks evened their record at 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the ASC.
McM dominated the Blazers (0-6, 0-2 ASC), especially after the opening period, holding a lead that reached double figures for more than 30 minutes of the game. The War Hawks trailed by two points with 1:08 left in the first quarter, but a
London Weilert jumper knotted the game at 10-10 to end the stanza. Then, a Weilert three-point basket to open the second quarter put McM ahead, 13-10.
It was a lead McMurry would not relinquish the rest of the game. McM lead at halftime, 29-24, and reached the double-digit advantage – 36-25 – with 7:35 remaining in the third. The War Hawks kept that cushion the balance of the contest, leading by as much as 20 points late in the game.
McM forced the Blazers into 18 turnovers as a unit, converting the miscues into 18 points. That, combined with a field goal shooting percentage of better than 43 percent as a team, helped push the War Hawks to the big win.
