CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball got its first look at its 2017-18 roster in a game setting, losing to NCAA Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – 62-43 – in an exhibition contest at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islander jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game. But the tenacious War Hawks clawed back and actually led 10-9, thanks to a Sarah Doherty three-ball with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
But from that juncture, the taller TAMUCC team took advantage of its height advantage to gain some breathing room. The War Hawks were out-scored in the paint, 42-12, by the Islanders, while also holding a 26-15 margin in points off turnovers.
For McM head coach
Brittany Densman-Roes, a bright spot was that of her bench play. The War Hawks reserves out-dueled the Islanders 18-15 in bench scoring. Kaymee Howell and Shabaria Walter each had six points in a reserve capacity.
Sophomore Skyler Reyna led McMurry in scoring with 11 points, as well as topping the rebounding efforts with six caroms. After a slow start, senior Sham Hunter finished with seven points and five boards.
Doherty also had six points for McM.. She and Howell both went 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. Isabel Carrion also pulled down five rebounds for the War Hawks.
McMurry will get the season going for real this coming weekend when it travels to California for the University for Redlands Classic on Friday and Saturday. McM will face host Redlands at 7 p.m. (PT) Friday (Nov. 17) and Chapman University at 5 p.m. (PT) Saturday (Nov. 18).
