ALPINE, Texas - McMurry University volleyball ran its victory streak to six matches by scoring a 3-1 American Southwest Conference win at Sul Ross State University. The War Hawks improved to 18-7 overall and 10-5 in the ASC with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 at the Gallego Center.
McMurry found itself down in the first set, 5-3. But after a side out, the War Hawks'
Jordyn Burnell would serve five-consecutive winners to make it 9-5 in her team's favor. The Lobos (3-24, 1-15 ASC) got to within a single point three times during the set but, with the score 16-15, Burnell notched a kill to get the ball back to McM and then proceeded to serve another four winning points to create separation, winning 25-20.
Set two took on much the same shape as the first, with SRSU leading 11-7 when McM head coach
Cammie Petree called a timeout to settle her troops. The strategy worked, as McM would score the next five points – with Burnell serving once again – to lead 12-11. The Lobos took a timeout and, from that point on, there were eight ties or lead changes before the War Hawks went ahead for good at 21-20 and finished the set at 25-22.
The third set was owned by the host SRSU team, leading 7-1 to open the match. McM knotted the score at 10-10, but the Lobos would take command the rest of the way. The War Hawks got to within a single point near the end, 23-22, but were not able to overtake the deficit entirely, falling 25-23.
The third set win by SRSU just "poked the bear," as McMurry came out in set No. 4 to score the first five points and eventually move ahead, 10-3. Sul Ross mounted a meager comeback – getting to within 10-7 – before McM extended and put the set, and match, away by the 25-16 final score.
Justice McGowan led McMurry's offensive attack with 15 kills and a .542 attack average. McGowan had five blocks and four digs, as well.
Madison Reed also tallied double figures in kills, with 10 total, and also had five blocks.
Verlyncia Nelson topped all players with six blocks in the match.
Jasmine Jones and
Khristyn Howard each contributed seven kills. Howard had four blocks and four digs.
The setter tandem of
Lauryn Davis and
Emarie James accounted for 43 of the War Hawks 467 assists. James had 24 assists and James 19. James also made 16 digs in the back row. Libero
Odalis Rodriguez had a team-leading 20 digs.
