BROWNWOOD, Texas - The McMurry University volleyball team battled back from an 0-2 deficit in its match at Howard Payne University, taking a 3-2 victory and the team's fourth-consecutive win. The War Hawks improved to 16-7 overall and 8-5 in the American Southwest Conference, with the victory at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Lady Jackets (8-16, 6-9 ASC) easily won the first two sets. In the first, HPU maintained a four to six point lead most of the set, before winning 25-19. In the second set, McM held the early lead, but HPU caught them at 14-14 and never trailed the rest of the way.
With its back to the wall, head coach
Cammie Petree's troops responded with a dominating win, 25-12, in the third set.
In the fourth set, the War Hawks were down 8-7, but a 4-0 run put them ahead 11-7. It was a lead McM would never relinquish. HPU knotted it at 18-18, before McM went ahead 22-20, eliciting a timeout by the Lady Jackets. HPU tied it at 22-22 once again, but the War Hawks closed it out on a
Justice McGowan kill, 25-23.
Howard Payne led 2-0 in the fifth and deciding set, but after McM got the ball back on the side out,
Jordyn Burnell would serve for five-consecutive winning points as the War Hawks took a commanding 6-2 lead. The Lady Jackets got to within 7-5, but McMurry would win seven of the next eight points to make it 14-6, on their way to the 15-8 win.
Jasmine Jones had a big night with a team-leading 16 kills and a .277 attack average. Jones also had eight digs and three blocks.
Burnell and McGowan each booked 11 kills. Burnell had 24 digs, eight assists and four of her team's seven service aces.
Madison Reed led McMurry with four blocks and also served up two aces. Reed had eight kills and hit .240.
Khristyn Howard and
Verlyncia Nelson had seven and six kills, respectively.
As a team, the War Hawks hit .250. On the other hand, the Lady Jackets had a .136 attack average.
