BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer dueled to a scoreless first half at Howard Payne University, but a big second period by the hosts spelled a 3-1 defeat. The War Hawks fell to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Lady Jackets improved to 5-5-1 and 4-4 in league.
McM would actually draw first blood in the contest. At the 53:00 mark, junior
Cristen Lumbreras took a pass from
Angelica Navarro and buried her sixth goal of the year to give the War Hawks the 1-0 lead.
But that would prove to be short-lived. Less than three minutes later, HPU knotted matters at 1-1 on a goal by Kaitlyn Harrison. It would prove to be then opening of the flood gates, as the Lady Jackets tallied twice more – in the 70th and 89th minutes – to secure the 3-1 victory.
The War Hawks proved the aggressor in the match, out-shooting HPU by a 17-9 margin. In the first half alone, McMurry was a dominating 12-2 in shot attempts, but came away empty-handed. HPU goalkeeper Nicole Goodwin had eight saves, five during that first-half barrage by McM.
Angelica Navarro led the War Hawks' assault with six shots, four on-goal. Lumbreras had three shots attempts, as did
Kaitlyn Roberts.
McMurry net-minder
Cindy Villasana was charged with all three HPU goals. She made four saves, as well.
