BROWNWOOD, Texas – After earning a pair of ties in overtime games the past two weeks, the third time was the charm for the McMurry University men's soccer, scoring a 2-1 win at Howard Payne University in the first extra segment. The victory improved the War Hawks to 6-4-2 overall and 3-2—2 in the ASC, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-6 and 3-5 in the ASC,
The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half. McM put the pressure on HPU early, out-shooting the hosts by a 7-3 count in the first 90 minutes. For the match, the War Hawks held a 16-10 cushion in shots.
It was not until the 75th minute that McM was able to take the upper hand. Junior
Josh Erwin netted his third goal of the season, thanks to a perfect ball from
Aaron Webb, to make it 1-0. Erwin's tally was even more impressive in that it came with his team playing down a man after McM starting goalkeeper
Alex Chavez received a red card in the 67th minute and an automatic ejection.
It appeared as if the War Hawks might be able to weather the storm in regulation. But in the 87th minute, the Yellow Jackets finally got to McM's
Francisco Avilez – on to replace Chavez - to tie the game at 1-1. Avilez and Chavez both had three saves during their respective stints in the nets.
When nothing was resolved in the final three minutes of regulation, the teams went to OT. But at 7:33 minutes into the first ten-minute extra period, McMurry got the game winning goal...with a little help from the Yellow Jackets. Javi Meji flicked the ball toward the face of the goal, where it was settled by
Jordan Sczech. Sczech sent the ball across the face of the goal and it was deflected into the net by an HPU defender for an "own goal" and War Hawks win.
Mejia had three of his team's shots, two on-goal. Erwin,
Jesus Sanchez,
Diego Paz,
Rafael Lara, Sczech and
Miguel Esteban Jr. all had two shots, as well.
