Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas –
Rafael Lara's goal in the second overtime made the difference as the McMurry University men's soccer team collected its first victory of the year, 3-2, over Huston-Tillotson University. The win was also the first as a college head coach for the War Hawks (1-2) first-year mentor
Tyler Tarango.
It was also the third time - in as many matches - that McM has played a contest decided by a 3-2 score in 2016. But it was the first in the War Hawks favor. Just three games in to the 2016 campaign, McM has already equaled its win total from all of 2015.
McMurry did not start its comeback until the second half, going into the halftime locker room down 1-0. However, in the 47th minute,
Miguel Esteban Jr. knotted matters at 1-1.
HTU retook the lead a few minutes later. But sophomore
Martin Ornelas got the War Hawks even in the 83rd minute of play, as it stood through regulation.
Neither team was able to tally in the first overtime segment. In the second extra period, freshman midfielder
Jesus Sanchez took a free kick, delivering the ball to Lara for the "golden goal".
McMurry will its fourth and fifth-consecutive road games this weekend in Sherman, Texas. The War Hawks face Centenary College on Saturday (1 p.m.) and host Austin College on Sunday (2 p.m.).
