FENTON, Mo. – Despite two late goals, the McMurry University men's soccer team dropped its second match of the season in a 3-2 setback at Webster University. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 0-2, while the Gorloks improved to 1-1.
The two teams dueled in the first half, with Webster taking a 1-0 halftime lead. Despite trailing at the break, McM out-shot the hosts, 6-5, in the opening stanza.
WU pushed across a pair of second-half goals to extend its cushion to 3-0 by the 71st minute. But just moments later, McMurry's
Rafael Lara drilled his first goal of the year – and McM career - to make it 3-1.
In the waning moments of the match, freshman
Javi Mejia-Escalante netted his first goal as a War Hawk, making it the 3-2 final score. McM has lost both contests, thus far, in 2016 by that exact score.
For the match, McMurry out-shot Webster by a 19-12 margin, putting eight shots directly on-goal. Gorlok goalie Elijah Smith had six saves. McM also had seven corner kicks, compared to three by WU.
McMurry net-minder
Alex Chavez had three saves. Chavez was charged with all three goals.
Mike Cruz and
Ahmad Holt Jr. each took four shot attempts. Lara tried five shots, with Mejia-Escalante and
Jesus Sanchez taking two shots each.
McMurry will play its third-consecutive road bout on Tuesday, traveling to Huston-Tillotson University in Austin. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
