War Hawks Register Third-Consecutive Shutout

PINEVILLE, La. – McMurry University men's soccer remained unbeaten in the American southwest Conference, earning a 2-0 road win at Louisiana College. The War Hawks  (3-3-1, 2-0-1 ASC) registered their third-consecutive shutout of the season, with the blanking of the Wildcats (0-9, 0-3 ASC).

It is the most consecutive shutouts by a McM team since the 2003 squad notched a school record four-consecutive "goose eggs".

Under first-year head coach Tyler Tarango, it is also the first time that a McMurry men's soccer team has reached the .500 level since the opening game of 2013, a span of 52 games. In that 2003 contest, McM had a 0-0 tie to open the campaign with a 0-0-1 record.

McMurry out-shot LC by a 25-5 margin, putting seven shots directly on goal. Javi Mejia-Escalante, Martin Ornelas and Rafael Lara each had four attempts. Mejia-Escalante and Lara put two shots on goal.

The two teams slugged it out in a scoreless first half. However, at the 57:00 minute mark of the match, Jesus Sanchez launched a shot that deflected off of LC goalkeeper Jacob Johnson. Lara was on the spot to put the rebound into the back of the net and put the War Hawks on top, 1-0.

In the 69th minute, Nicholas Garcia collected his first collegiate goal to make it 2-0.  Ahmad Holt Jr. was credited with the assist on the play that gave McM some needed insurance.

But the way the War Hawks defenders played, one goal would have been more than enough. The Wildcats did not get a shot on-goal for their quintet of attempts, thanks to the War Hawks' defensive half led by Mason Mendell, Josh Erwin, Jose Mireles and Matt Hernandez. Goalkeeper Alex Chavez went untested, with no saves versus Louisiana College.

McMurry will close its two-game road trip with a Saturday match at Belhaven University.
