ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's soccer remained unbeaten in the American Southwest Conference, thanks to its 1-0 upset of the University of Texas-Tyler at Wilford Moore Stadium. The win by the War Hawks (2-3-1, 1-0-1 ASC) reversed direction of last year's 4-0 loss to the Patriots (3-3, 0-2 ASC).
McM scored early at the 13:58 juncture of the match – and then made it stand up with stellar defensive. The War Hawks tallied the only goal of the contest off of a free kick, when
Josh Erwin sent a free kick in toward the right side of the goal, where
Javi Mejia-Escalante settled the ball and quickly sent it past UTT goalkeeper Carlos Prieto to make it 1-0 and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Despite of the precarious one-goal cushion, the McMurry hopes were buoyed by goalie
Alex Chavez had an answer for every shot attempt on goal – nine in all – by the Patriots. Chavez had eight of his nine saves in the first half, alone.
Overall, UTT drilled 18 shot attempts, to just five by the War Hawks. But McM made the most of its tries, putting all five shots on Prieto, who made four saves.
The War Hawks' defensive half – led by Erwin,
Mason Mendell,
Jose Mireles and
Matt Hernandez – helped out it goalkeeper by frustrating UTT's advances and seemingly-constant pressure. The group made several back saves, as well, to keep the shutout intact.
