SHERMAN, Texas – McMurry University completed play in the Austin College Invitational with two more wins, knocking off both SUNY-Cortland, 3-0, and University of Dallas, 3-2. The War Hawks (6-3) have now won three in a row, defeating Cortland 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 and the Crusaders by scores of 18-25, 27-25, 25-16, 12-25, 15-9.
Senior middle blocker
Katy Headrick was named to the all-tournament team, her second such honor for McM in as many tournaments this year. Headrick did a little bit of everything for McM, which went 3-1 in the tourney. She averaged 1.93 kills per set, had three aces, averaged 2.36 digs per set (leading McM) and topped the squad in blocks with 16 (1.14 per set).
After a close first set, 25-23, McM had little trouble dispatching of the Dragons (4-3) the final two sets.
Jasmine Jones had nine kills and
Baylie Barnes eight kills to pace the offensive attack.
Jordyn Burnell had seven kills, while Headrick added six more. Barnes also had nine digs.
Libero
Odalis Rodriguez's 18 digs paced the back row players. Headrick and
Jaelyn Green added eight digs each.
Julie Campos ad a team- best 17 assists, while
Madison Fatheree added 14 helps.
Asa team, McM hit a .270 attack average against SUNY-Cortland. The Dragons hit .136 for the match.
Versus the Crusaders (4-5), the War Hawks had their first five-set match of the year. This time it was Barnes and
Justice McGowan leading the attacking with 12 kills each, Burnell and Headrick each booked nine kills, as the quartet accounted for 42 of the team's 54 kills between them.
Fatheree had 23 more assists versus UD and
Emarie James gave off 12.
Rodriguez rolled up 30 digs. Headrick, James and Fatheree had 18, 13 and 12 digs, respectively. McGowan's seven blocks also helped the McM defense, while Headrick collected five blocks.
