Box Score
SHAWNEE, Okla. – McMurry University's baseball team dropped a 10-0 decision to No. 1-seed Oklahoma Baptist University in a seven-inning run-rule game, in the second round of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region tournament. The War Hawks (21-21) will have a rematch with Dallas Christian in an elimination game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Bison Field.
OBU is also the top-rated team in the nation for the NCCAA, as well.
Bison (35-15) starter Nathan Thompson was overpowering, throwing a no-hitter against McM and coming within three batters of a perfect game. Thompson, who struck out 16 War Hawks, issued walks in the fifth and sixth innings, and hit a batter in the seventh.
Thompson received plenty of support from his batters, as well. OBU had 11 hits, with four doubles and two home runs among them. The biggest damage was a seven-run fifth inning outburst, as the Bison sent 10 men to the plate.
McMurry starter
Aaron Donald went 4.1 innings and was charged with six runs, all earned. Donald allowed at least one baserunner in each of the five innings he worked, including giving up the four doubles. He struck out two and walked two.
But Donald's successors were equally unsuccessful against the powerful Bison bats.
Will Dunlap replaced Donald, but failed to record an out and left with the bases loaded.
Wes Cauley was then summoned to the hill and was tagged for a grand slam on his first pitch to an OBU batter Kevin Olmeda, upping the score to 10-0 through the top of the fourth.
Cauley settled down and retired four in a row after giving up the longball, until an error by centerfielder
Kevin Garza snapped the string in the sixth.
McM's most effective pitcher of the night was senior reliever
Mike Hoffman. Hoffman pitched a scoreless seventh and retired the Bison in order, recording a strikeout.
