Twice is Nice! War Hawks Sweep UMHB

ABILENE, Texas – Pinch-hitter Danny Perkins' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two gave McMurry University a walk-off 11-10 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, completing the doubleheader sweep at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks (12-14) also topped the Crusaders (10-16) in the first game, 2-1.

In the seven-inning first game, both starting pitchers had shutouts going through the first five frames and all the runs in the game would come in the sixth. McM's Benjamin Russell went 5.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowed one unearned run. He was lifted for reliever Juan Valadez with bases loaded.

Valadez induced a fly out to deep right that allowed UMHB's only run to cross the plate with two out. A force out closed out the Cru.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Jordan Speck smacked one-out single and moved to second on Ty Kirks' single. That brought up designated hitter Tyler Jenkins, who cracked a base-clearing double to left-center that proved to be the difference in the game, 2-1.

After permitting a leadoff single in the ninth, Valadez (3-2) settled down and retired the next three batters to earn his third win of the year.

Jenkins was 3-for-3 as the only War Hawk with more than one hit in the opening game.

Jenkins kept up his torrid hitting in game two. Trailing 1-0 after 1 ½ innings, Jenkins crushed a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 1-1. It was Jenkins' team-leading fourth homer of the season.

The Cru put up three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to lead, 5-1. But McM rallied – with two out – to remain close. Three wild pitches by UMHB also helped the War Hawks cause. Kevin Garza drove in a pair of runs with a triple to center, plating Chase Bledsoe (who reached via a pinch-hit single) and Curtis Summers. With Jordan Speck at the plate, Garza came home on a wild pitch, 5-4.

The see-saw battle continued in the seventh. The Crus tallied three times in the top of the inning, only to see McMurry tie the game at 8-8 with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Baker had a one-out double and came home on Matt Chalk's RBI single. Back-to-back singles up the middle by Nicholas Moore and Noah Clarkson loaded the bases for Summers.

After a UMHB pitching change, Summers lifter a sacrifice fly to center as Chalk made a line for home. Garza was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases for Speck, who promptly smacked a two-run that tied matters with two innings remaining.

The War Hawks took over in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to a two-run single by Clarkson that put the hosts ahead, 10-8, heading into the ninth. However, with one-out, McM reliever Will Dunlap – the War Hawks' fourth pitcher of the day - walked the bases loaded.

UMHB took advantage with a two-run double to tie the game, 10-10. Dunlap struck out the final two batters to end the threat.

Patrick Adams drew a one-out walk to open McM's half of the ninth. Jenkins delivered a single to right-center, with Adams motoring to third on the play and Jenkins going to second on the throw. Baker was walked to set up a force.

That brought up Perkins, batting for Randy Crevier. Perkins drove an 0-1 pitch to deep right, that had more than enough real estate between it and the plate to permit Adams to come home with the game-winner on the sacrifice fly, 11-10.

Clarkson had the big game for McM, going 3-for-5 to pace the 16-hit attack. Clarkson scored once and had a pair of RBI.

Garza (2-5), Speck (2-6), Jenkins (2-5) and Chalk (2-5) all enjoyed multi-hit games for the War Hawks, as well. Garza and Speck each had two RBI, while Chalk scored twice.

Dunlap was the winning pitcher for McMurry, after his 1.2 innings of work. It was Dunlap's first win as a War Hawk.
