JACKSON, Miss. – McMurry University's baseball team lost an American Southwest Conference doubleheader at Belhaven University, falling by scores of 4-0 and 3-1 at Smith-Willis Stadium.
The losses also put the War Hawks' (16-20) back against the proverbial wall. McM needs to reach the .500 plateau with its won-lost record in order to qualify for the NCCAA regional tournament, meaning the War Hawks would need to win all four of its remaining games (the series finale at Belhaven on Saturday, as well as sweeping Ozarks next weekend in Abilene).
In the afternoon's opening game, McM was held to four total hits. Meanwhile, McMurry starter
Benjamin Russell (2-4) was tagged for four runs (three earned) and seven hits by the Blazers (20-16) over his 5.0 innings of work.
In the second contest, BU carried a 2-0 lead into the latter innings, when the War Hawks finally got on the scoreboard. In the top of the eighth, McM's
Robert White reached on am fielding error and, eventually, went all the way to third on a wild pitch. The next batter for the War Hawks –
Jordan Speck – grounded out tom shortstop, allowing White to come home to make it 2-1.
But the Blazers got the run back in the bottom of the frame and then kept McM at bay in the ninth (despite McMurry getting two men on base in their final at-bat).
McM collected six hits in game two. Leadoff batter
Kevin Garza was the only player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
Tyler Jenkins and
Taylor Ward each had a double in the loss.
Starter
Garrett Johnston (3-4) absorbed the loss for McMurry, Johnston went 7.2 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned).
The series concludes with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
