ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with the University of Texas at Dallas, losing the opener 4-3 and winning the second by an identical 4-3 score, at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks are now 16-18 on the year, with the Comets standing at 19-13.
On the day, McM scored six of its combined seven runs in the first inning.
In the seven-inning first game of the afternoon, a two-out rally in the bottom of the first got the War Hawks in business early. The third McM batter of the day –
Danny Perkins – singled up the middle on the first pitch from UTD's Brandon Lee. That brought up McM designated hitter
Tyler Jenkins, who hammered a 1-2 pitch well over the left field fence for his team-leading sixth home run of the season and a 2-0 lead for the hosts.
The Comets got the McM starter
Garrett Johnston for a pair of runs in the third to knot the contest at 2-2. UTD took the lead in the top of the fifth when – for the fourth time in the series – the Comets had a sacrifice bunt RBI, making it 3-2.
McMurry got even in the bottom of that same frame, thanks to an unearned run.
Kevin Garza singled to shortstop, took second on a throwing error and moved over to third on a ground out. With
Chris Baker at the plate, Lee uncorked a wild pitch that plated Garza with the equalizer.
With one out in the top of the sixth, the Comets got a single and double to put two runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk, Johnston's day was over as
Juan Valadez was summoned to the mound for McM. After retiring his first batter on a fly to short center, Valadez surrendered a single through the left side to give UTD what would be the deciding run, 4-3.
Johnston (3-3) went 5.1 innings and allowed six of the Comets' eight hits in the game. He had a walk and no strikeouts.
The War Hawks' batters also amassed eight hits in the loss, no one with more than one hit. Jenkins was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and two RBI.
In game two, McMurry would put its entire offensive output into the first inning, taking a 4-0 advantage. Garza led off with a single and, with one out,
Ty Kirk singles. Jenkins singled home Garza, then a ground out moved everyone up 90 feet.
Robert White's single to right drove in two more and would eventually come home, himself, on a wild pitch.
McM hurler
Aaron Donald cruised through 6.1 innings, giving up four hits and a pair of earned runs (one each in the second and seventh innings), before giving way to the bullpen. Rickey Lopez pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing an unearned run and a pair of hits.
Will Dunlap pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the year.
Jenkins went 2-for-3 to lead McM's seven-hit attack.
