McM Attack Takes its Toll on Belhaven in Sweep

RICHARDSON, Texas – A strong attacking game propelled the McMurry University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Belhaven University on the first day of the American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournament. The War Hawks (13-6) topped the Blazers (8-14) by set scores of 25-16, 26-24, 25-15, played at UT-Dallas Activity Center.

A trio of McM players – Madison Reed, Jordyn Burnell and Justice McGowan –  paced the team's attack with seven kills each. All three also had quality efforts to finish with attack averages of .583 for Burnell, .500 for Reed and .316 for McGowan.

Jasmine Jones added six kills.

As a team, McMurry hit a healthy .275 for the match, including .407 in the final set. Conversely, BU was held to a .078 attack average, thanks largely to seven War Hawks' team blocks. McGowan had a match-leading five blocks (four assisted), while Reed, Baylie Barnes, Katy Headrick and Burnell each chipped in two assisted blocks.

McM also helped its cause with some deft serving, booking nine aces. Headrick and libero Odalis Rodriguez each had four aces.

Rodriguez also made 12 digs and Headrick 10. Christian Brown and Emarie James had eight and six digs, respectively.

The setter duo of Madison Fatheree and James combined for 28 assists. Fatheree led McM with 16 helps and James had 12.

The War Hawks will play a split doubleheader of matches on Saturday, finishing up the ASC Crossover tourney against UT-Tyler at 12:30 p.m.  McM will then head down the road to face Dallas Christian College in a non-conference match at 5 p.m.
