CONWAY, Ark. – McMurry University baseball's magical 2015 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon, losing to Central Baptist College, 4-3, in an elimination bracket game. The War Hawks closed the year with a record of 31-13 overall.
Â
Trevor Ragsdale (2-2) absorbed the loss for the War Hawks. Ragsdale worked five innings and was charged with all four runs, three of which were earned. He struck out two Mustangs, but was victimized by four of his own walks and surrendered four of CBC's five hits in the game.
Â
John Eric Cortez pitched four innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
Â
The host Mustangs put two runs on the board in their first at-bats of the game. But McM got one back in their half of the first after
Patrick Adams lined a single to left-center field and, eventually, was driven home on
Zack Hagan's single to left to make it 2-1.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, senior third baseman
Casey Berryman launched a prodigious blast to left field for his fourth home run of the season. Berryman's solo shot knotted matters at 2-2.
Â
In the top of the fifth, CBC added all the runs it would need for the win. The Mustangs crossed the plate twice – aided by catcher
Taylor Ward – to pull ahead 4-2.
Â
McMurry got to within one run in the bottom of the seventh after
Christian Simmons drilled a one-out single to left and stole second. With two out, pinch hitter
Mikal Hunter slapped a single to right that plated Simmons to make it 4-3. In the ninth,
Ben Douglas led off with a single, bringing up Berryman as the potential winning run.
Â
But Berryman grounded into a double play and, after Simmons grounded out to third, the War Hawks season came to a close at the NCCAA regional level for the second-straight year.
Â
Hagan was the lone McM player with multiple hits. Hagan was 2-for-4 with the RBI. In all, the War Hawks amassed eight hits in the game.
