War Hawks Win 7th in a Row; Top DeSales, 11-2

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Not playing a game in nearly two weeks – nor sub-freezing Texas temperatures during that time – could cool down the McMurry University baseball team. The War Hawks (10-3) won their seventh-consecutive game with an 11-2 win over DeSales University, in a game played at Trinity University.

It marked the sixth time – all during that win skein – that McM has scored double-digit run totals. It was also the eighth time in 2015 that the War Hawks had rolled up double figures in hits, banging out 13 versus the Bulldogs (2-4).

Senior firstbaseman Cody Howard had the big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. His two-run double in the third inning was the War Hawks' only extra-base hit in the game and gave his team a 3-0 lead at the time.

Shortstop Kyle Sargent, who went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, laced an RBI single prior to Howard's big hit in the top of the third frame to open McM's scoring spree.

Ricky Garcia went 3-for-4 and Patrick Adams 2-for-5 as the other War Hawks with multi-hit games.  Garcia scored twice, while Adams scored three runs and drove in three runs, as well.  Catcher Mikal Hunter was 1-for-4 with three RBI, aided by a sacrifice fly.

McM starting pitcher John Eric Cortez got out of a couple jams early and, in the bottom of the fourth, finally surrendered a run for the first time in 18.0 innings pitched. It ballooned his earned run average to 0.44 on the season, as he upped his personal won-lost record to 3-0 in 2015. Opponents are hitting just .141 versus Cortez this season.

Cortez would finish the outing versus DeSales with 6.0 innings of work, allowing three hits and the one earned run. He had three strikeouts and two walks.

After the Bulldogs had cut the deficit to 3-1 through four innings, McMurry broke things open by responding with two runs in the fifth, a four-spot in the sixth and another pair of runs in the seventh to make it 11-1 through seven innings.  DU plated a solo run in the bottom of the eighth for the 11-2 final score.

The same two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon at Trinity's field. First pitch is slated for noon.
