ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team completed the three-game series sweep of Schreiner University, winning by a 6-3 score on Sunday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks improved to 18-4 on the year, winning their fifth consecutive game and 15th out of their last 16.
The Mountaineers (4-20) lost their eighth-consecutive game.
McM again played longball, hitting two more home runs versus Schreiner. The War Hawks smacked a total of six round-trippers in the series and upped their season total to 17 homers.
In the bottom of the second,
Ben Douglas reached on a one-out singles. That brought up catcher
Mikal Hunter, who lined his first homer of the year over the left-center field fence, giving his team the 2-0 lead.
SU was able to produce an unearned run off of McM starter
Lanny Zier in the top of the third, cutting the cushion in half, 2-1. It also broke Zier's scoreless innings streak at 25 innings, dating back to February 8.
In the McMurry half of the third,
Patrick Adams led off with a single to short and
Cody Howard followed with a single to right-center field. A throwing error by Connor Ver Schurr allowed both runners to move up.
Zack Hagan then reached on an RBI fielder's choice, with Howard out at third and Adams scoring.
Hagan then stole second and went to third on
Ricky Garcia's single up the middle (which extending his hitting streak to 11 games). After a wild pitch, Douglas drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Hunter flew out deep to center, plating Hagan on the sacrifice fly. An RBI single by
Casey Berryman (1-4) gave McMurry a 5-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Howard unloaded his fourth home run of 2015, lining Stewart's 1-1- offering over the wall in right-center and making the score 6-1. It also upped Howard's team-leading RBI total to 29 on the year.
In the game, Howard went 4-for-4 for his ninth multiple-hit game of the season. Douglas was 2-for-3, as the only other player with more than one hit for McM. Douglas also reached base safely for the 15th-consecutive game.
The Mountaineers added a pair of runs in the eighth, ending the day for Zier. Zier went 7 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, struck out three and walked one. Zier improved his personal record to 6-0 on the year.
Trevor Ragsdale came on to close out the eighth inning.
Ricky Lopez pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
