Box Score 2 WAXAHACHIE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team ran its winning streak to six games, sweeping a doubleheader from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 3-0 and 10-0. The War Hawks (9-3) also swept the three-game series versus the Lions (7-10).
The big story of the day, however, was junior right-handed pitcher
Ben Bates' (2-1) effort in the nightcap. Bates was overpowering in gaining his second-consecutive win, allowing just one hit – a ball to the left side of the infield which was unable to be played – and striking out seven SAGU batters. He walked just one and threw just 88 pitches.
McMurry batters supported Bates' exploits on the mound with a 10-run, 10-hit barrage unleashed on four Lions' pitchers.
Casey Berryman went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in.
Kyle Sargent was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Pacing the McM hitters.
Cody Howard and Sargent each had triples for the only extra-base hits of the game.
In the opening game of the day, senior
Lanny Zier improved his personal record to 3-0 – lowering his earned run average to a miniscule 0.86 – with five strong innings in the seven-inning game. Zier struck out five and walked four, scattering three hits along the way.
Ricky Lopez threw two hitless and scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Both teams had three hits – all singles – but it was the War Hawks who took advantage of a pair of Lions' errors to help produce its three runs. McM scored once in the third and twice in the sixth inning.
Patrick Adams, Howard and Sargent had McMurry's hits in the game. Adams and
Zack Hagan were each credited with RBI.
The War Hawks will host Cameron University next Tuesday (3 p.m.) in a single game at Walt Driggers Field.
