PINEVILLE, La. – The McMurry University football team closed the books on the 2015 season, suffering a 28-15 road loss at Louisiana College. The War Hawks (4-6) braved the rain-soaked conditions in dropping the season finale to the Wildcats (3-6) at Wildcats Field.
McM was held without a touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter, despite out-gaining LC in total offense (352 to 313) and plays (77 to 61). The War Hawks tallied first on a 31-yard field goal by
Joey Silva with 1:29 left in the first quarter, but it would be the last points McM would see until the fourth period.
In between, the Wildcats put up 14 points in the second quarter to carry a 14-3 advantage into the intermission. LC added an early score in the fourth stanza to take what appeared to be a comfortable 21-3 cushion.
But McMurry once again displayed its resiliency of late and mounted a late assault. Midway through the final segment, the War Hawks embarked on an 80-yard, 11-play drive that was capped by a 31-yard
Matthew McHugh to
Emmanuel Mulumba aerial that made it 21-9, after the failed extra point kick, with 6:26 left to play.
McM then tried an on-side kick which it recovered on the LC 34 yard line.
Jordan Washington was the War Hawk on the spot to recover the kick.
Freshman
Dontrell Dock carried the ball on six of the eight plays – picking up 26 yards – and smashed his way into the end zone from five yards out with 4:17 left. The PAT kick was again unsuccessful, cutting the deficit to 21-15.
Things appeared to continue headed in McMurry's direction for a comeback when, on the ensuing possession, the Wildcats fumbled the ball and
Ryan Williams recovered for the War Hawks at the Louisiana College 38 with 4:07 left in the game. Unfortunately, McM gave the ball right back on its first play when Dock lost the handle.
The Wildcats not only recovered, but also kept control of the ball. LC drove 61 yards for an insurance score, 28-15, with 1:28 left in the game and as the score remained until the game clock ran out.
Dock – who moved into a starting role in the backfield the last three games – had another fine effort. Dock gained 96 yards on 21 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
McHugh completed 13-of-29 passes for 151 yards and the TD. He was sacked three times by the Wildcats' defense.
Defensively, linebacker
Chase Franklin had a game-high 13 tackles (7 solo) and forced a fumble.
Ashton Campbell added nine total tackles and
Desmond Guy seven stops, along with an interception.
