DENVER, Colo. – A goal with just one minute left in the second overtime sank the McMurry University hopes for a win at Johnson & Wales University, falling 2-1 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The loss overshadowed what was a very solid effort from the War Hawks (2-11-2) to even be in the overtime in the first place versus the Wildcats (3-12). JWU looked as though it was going to claim the win in regulation, after breaking open a scoreless tie with a goal at the 81:06 mark of the match.
However, with just 3:02 left in regulation, that's when McM senior
Holiday Williams finally broke through for her team. And it was almost as if it were a matter of time for Williams to score, after taking six total shots – with four directly on goal – at that point of the match
Williams got her team even by netting a free kick from 22 yards out. It was Williams' third tally of the season to make it 1-1 heading into overtime.
Neither team was able to resolve anything in the first ten minute segment or for the bulk of the second OT period. But with just one minute left, JWU's Kelsie Treloar hit a ball past War Hawks' net-minder
Simone Heinle from 15 yards on the left side for the match winner, 2-1.
It was a bittersweet ending for Heinle, as well, who was stellar in the net by turning away 14 shots by the Wildcats.
As a team, JWU out-shot the War Hawks by a 24-14 margin for the contest, putting 16 total shots on-goal. McM had seven shots on-goal, as Wildcats goalie Victoria Diaz had six saves. McM's
Hailey Presley had three shots (two on-goal) and
Julissa Alvarez-Mendoza added two shots on-goal.
McMurry will next be in action on Friday (Oct. 30) at home versus LeTourneau University at 1 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
