ABILENE, Texas – It took a penalty kick goal to derail the McMurry University men's soccer upset bid of the University of Houston-Victoria, instead taking a 1-0 loss at Wilford Moore Stadium. The War Hawks fell to 1-13-1, while the Jaguars improved to 11-3.
While UHV controlled the offensive stats – out-shooting McM by a 20-2 margin – the War Hawks stood firm thanks to their stout defensive effort, keyed by backs
Michael von Ende-Becker, Joshua Erwin and goalkeeper
Austin Long. Long turned in seven saves, several of the spectacular variety to keep his team in the match.
Both of McM's shot attempts came off of the foot of
Rafael Lara.
The lone blemish on the War Hawks' day came at the 30:32 minute mark when McM was whistled for a hand ball in the box. That gave the Jaguars the penalty kick, which was converted by Reece Hannigan for his fifth goal of the season.
McMurry will next be in action on Friday (Oct. 30) when it hosts LeTourneau University (4 p.m.).
