ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University saw its offense sputter in close encounters with the Sul Ross State University end zone, suffering a 13-7 loss at Jackson Field. The setback to the Lobos (2-5), in the 85th meeting between the teams, extended the War Hawks' (3-5) losing streak to three games.
It was also the fourth time that McM has lost a game by one touchdown or less this season.
McMurry had encroached inside the SRSU 30 yard line on six occasions, only to fail to score in five of those opportunities. The War Hawks were also burned on a 100-yard "pick six" by the Lobos in the opening period when they pilfered a pass by McM quarterback
Matthew McHugh.
But McMurry was able to knot the game at 7-7 early in the second stanza. The 95-yard drive was capped when McHugh hit wide receiver
Charles Agugua with a 22-yard touchdown strike at the 11:21 juncture.
Agugua finished the day with four catches for 105 yards.
With 7:34 remaining until the intermission, SRSU added what would be the deciding points on a seven-yard TD pass to cap a 70-yard series. The extra point attempt was blocked by McMurry's
Calvin Middlebrooks, leaving the score at 13-7.
The War Hawks' offense out-gained the Lobos by a 315-to-224 yard differential. On the ground,
Dontrell Dock had his career-best rushing game with McM, gaining 94 yards on 18 carries. McHugh was 17-for-27 passing, for 227 yards.
Sophomore linebacker
Jacob Ferguson had five tackles, while
Chase Franklin and
Ryan Williams had four stops each.
Ryan McBeth also had an interception, the 16th by the War Hawks in 2015.
McMurry will play its final home game of 2015 next Saturday when it welcomes Belhaven University. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
