War Hawks Defeated by Angelo State, 45-14

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – McMurry University's football team was haunted by its miscues, battling Angelo State to the very end in a 45-14 loss at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. The setback left the War Hawks with a 1-1 record, while the Rams improved to 2-0.

Angelo State scored on its first possession of the night after a botched punt attempt, taking possession on the War Hawks' 34 yard line. Five plays later, the Rams capped the series when Blake Smith dive in from one yard out.

That's when the rain and lightning came. At the 5:52 juncture of the first quarter, the game was stopped and the stadium evacuated per NCAA regulations. The total time of the delay was 74 minutes before action resumed.

The Rams use the second quarter to extend their lead, adding two touchdowns and a field goal to their coffers. A 40-yard field goal was followed a pair of Kyle Washington touchdown aerials of 8 and 10 yards.

ASU would take the 24-0 cushion into the halftime locker room.

McMurry took advantage of a bad punt snap for good field position early in the third stanza. The War Hawks took over on downs on the Rams' 25.  On the sixth play of the series, Matt McHugh floated a nine-yard strike to Charles Agugua in the corner of the end zone.  Joey Silva's extra point kick made the score 24-7 with 12:24 left in the period.

ASU scored its next two TDs off of interceptions. On a first down from the McM 34, ASU tallied on the first play from scrimmage. Then, a pilfered pass in the end zone was returned 100 yards by ASU's Paul Mason, making it 38-7 with 3:37 remaining in the third.

On the first play of the first quarter, McMurry found pay dirt once more. This time it was Matt McHugh connecting with senior Jeret Smith on a beautiful 16-yarder over the middle to make it 38-14 with the PAT.

ASU added a final score with 11:59 left to play for the 45-14 final score.

On the evening, McHugh was 21-of-36 for 205 yards and the pair of touchdowns. Four different War Hawks were targets of McHugh.

Defensively, Desmond Guy had a game-high 11 tackles. Linebackers Tyreace House and Josh Jones had eight tackles each, with lineman Calvin Middlebrooks making seven stops.
