SHERMAN, Texas – McMurry University's swimmers pulled off a double victory Saturday at Austin College, winning the women's contest, 117-81, and the men's by a count of 115-91. The War Hawk women garnered first place in 10 of 11 events, while their male counterparts hit gold in eight of 11 races.
In the women's competition, sophomore
Kelsey Frazier won a pair of individual races. Frazier won the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.14) and also the 100 butterfly (1:04.97). Fellow sophomore
Amber Garrett was the War Hawks' "work horse," pulling victories in the grueling 1000 freestyle (11:57.28) and 500 freestyle (5:46.97).
Kelly McNamee, a sophomore, led a 1-2 finish by McM in the 200 freestyle. McNamee touched at 2:11.27 minutes, with teammate
Shannon Samples at 2:16.38. Samples also won the 100 freestyle (1:02.26) and McNamee was second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.18) to teammate
Robyn Remschel's time of 1:00.08.
Freshman
Zandria Rodriguez set the pace in the 100 breast stroke (1:18.03), with
Samantha Spain in second (1:21.89) in the event.
McMurry's women also swept both the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relays. In the MR, it was the quartet of McNamee, Samples, Rodriguez and Spain clocking out at 1:54.97 minutes. The freestyle relay was comprised of Remschel, Rodriguez, Frazier and Spain, finishing the race at 2:00.59.
On the men's side of the action, junior
Kamron Salinas and freshman
Vincent Crosby II were both double individual winners. Salinas carried the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:05.33 and then won the 100 breast stroke at 1:03.65 minutes.
Crosby – along with teammate
Craig Bell – placed 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Crosby finished at 56.06 seconds and Bell chimed in at 57.70. Crosby also won the 500 freestyle (5:21.67).
Sophomore
Cameron Mills took the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.10 seconds. Junior
Kent Grimes was victorious in the 100 freestyle (51.61), as well.
Like the women's team, the McMurry men also won both relay races. The 200 freestyle relay group –
David Bowers, Mills, Bell and Grimes – had a winning time of 1:33.50. In the 200 medley relay, Bowers, Salinas, Crosby and Grimes took first in a clocking of 1:41.31 minutes.
