KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The 2014 season came to a close for McMurry's volleyball team on Friday at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship Tournament. The War Hawks (21-13) lost to Oakland City University (Ind.) in their final pool play bout and then fell to Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in the single-elimination bracket round.
The War Hawks started the day finishing up pool play versus the No. 6-seed, Oakland City University (Ind.). McM won the first set, 25-23, but then lost the next three sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16.
In the opening set, McMurry found itself down 18-12, before getting back to within one, 19-18, after a kill by
Lauren Heathcote. McM eventually knotted the match at 20-20 and, after an ace by
Madison Fatheree, and kills by
Kayla Hines and
Kelsey Harkins to pull ahead, 23-20. OCU reeled off three straight winners to again tie matters at 23, before a kill by Harkins and a Mighty Oaks attack error put set one in the McMurry column, 25-23.
The War Hawks led set two by a precarious 10-9 score when OCU called a timeout. After the break, the Oaks posted four-consecutive points to take the lead – 13-10 – that they would not relinquish the rest of the set. Sets three and four were dominated by Oakland City early-on in each segment.
Katy Headrick led McM's offense against OCU, notching 12 kills and a .259 attack percentage. Catherin Heath added 10 kills in 21 attempts (with three errors, for a .333 attack average.
Sanders finished the match with nine kills and four blocks. Heath also had four blocks (two solo and two assists).
Morgan Thomas and
Jessica Tennis had 22 and 21 assists, respectively. Meanwhile, libero
Jessica Cory covered the back row with 22 digs.
Harkins amassed eight kills and 11 digs in the match. Hines also put down eight balls on the OCU side.
That put the War Hawks into the single-elimination bracket against the tournament's No. 1-seeded team, Trinity Christian College. McM quickly found out why the Trolls (36-10) were tabbed atop the rankings, falling in three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-15.
Heath's even kills and two blocks topped McM's attack. Hines had six kills and Sanders five for the match.
Headrick also had a pair of blocks. Cory made 13 digs and Thomas gave off 10 assists.
As a unit, McM hit just .017 for its final match.
McMurry closed the campaign on a seven-match losing streak.
