COMMERCE, Texas – McMurry University's football team fell for the fifth-consecutive week, losing at Lone Star Conference leader Texas A&M-Commerce, 91-13, at Memorial Stadium.
The War Hawks fell to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in the LSC. The Lions improved to 7-2, 6-1 in LSC play.
McM had a great start to the game, when War Hawks defensive back
Decorian Johnson intercepted Tyrik Rollinson on the very first play of the contest. But when McM was not able to capitalize, TAMUC would reel off 35 unanswered points before the War Hawks could answer.
Both of McM's scores came from senior wide receiver
Jeret Smith, who continues to post impressive numbers versus all comers. Against the highly-touted Lions, Smith caught six passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. His TDs came on grabs of 82 yards in the second quarter and 59 yards in the fourth.
Smith has at least one touchdown reception in every McM game this season.
After last week's injury to starting quarterback
Matthew McHugh, McM head coach
Lance Hinson employed a "QB by committee" strategy, with four different players heading the team's offense against TAMUC.
Cy Ward got the start and was 10-of-17 for 116 yards. As a group, McM signal-callers passed for 300 yards.
Gregory Pinckney's seven tackles led the Maroon and White defense.
Ryan Williams and
Demonte Byrd had six tackles, each.
