Volleyball Opens Schreiner Tournament with a Win

KERRVILLE, Texas – The McMurry volleyball team opened play at the Schreiner Classic tournament with a 3-1 win over University of the Southwest on Friday evening. The War Hawks (19-6) topped the Mustangs by scores 25-12, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23.

McM swept the three-game series versus USW in 2014, as well.

Senior Kayla Hines swung the big arm for the War Hawks, knocking down a match-high 11 kills in 27 attempts. She also had two defensive digs.

Audrey Sanders also tallied double digit kills with 10. She hit a match-leading .643, making just one error in her 14 attempts.

Lauren Heathcote and Katy Headrick each added eight kills to round out McM's leaders on the offensive side of the net. Headrick also had a team-high three blocks.

Morgan Thomas had 21 assists and teammate Jessica Tennis added 16. On defense, Tennis had 19 digs and Thomas dug 10 balls.  Junior libero Jessica Cory had 20 digs in the match.

Kelsey Harkins also had double-digit digs with 12. Harkins' all-around good night included six kills and a block, as well. Madison Fatheree served up two of McMurry's three aces.

The War Hawks will close the tourney – and the regular season – Saturday with a pair of matches versus Centenary College and host Schreiner University. A win in either contest will give the War Hawks' team a 20-win season for just the eighth time in the 41-year history of the sport at McM. Six of the previous seven 20-win campaigns have come under current head coach Cammie Petree.
