WAR HAWKS OPEN SEASON WITH TIE

Box Score ABILENE, Texas — The McMurry men's soccer team played its home opener Friday night at Wilford Moore Stadium against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers. It was a hard fought defensive match, and in the end, the score was tied 1-1 at the end of double overtime.

"I think we did fine, we were playing real well in the first half. We were moving the ball, connecting, finding feet," said head coach Paul Tate after the game. "First game of the year wasn't bad."

From an offensive standpoint, the War Hawks were poised to strike against the Tigers on several occasions but couldn't seem to connect. McMurry had eleven shots on goal throughout the game, but only one shot by Cody Gentry in the second half at 66:45 found its way to the back of the net. That put the War Hawks up for their first and only lead in the game. McM was only able to hold on to that lead for one minute and fourteen seconds before Ouachita's Brandon Hom scored an unassisted goal to tie the match up at 67:59.

"We should have never let that easy goal in," said Tate. "But it happens…we have to keep the ball."

There were several opportunities for both teams to take the lead, but the War Hawks' Neil 'O Sullivan and the Tiger's David Henley combined for a total of eight saves during one hundred ten minutes of soccer.

"We should have finished more chances," said Tate. "There were way too many chances that we could have finished and we should have."

The match was a physical one and many of the closer calls were overlooked by the officiating crew. However, despite their relaxed officiating, the match still had four yellow cards within the ninety minutes of the regulation game.

The War Hawks travel to Canyon, Texas next Friday to play West Texas A&M in nonconference action.
