Baseball To Host Oklahoma Christian Monday

ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry baseball team will look to extend its winnings streak to four games when it plays host to Oklahoma Christian University on Monday afternoon.

The War Hawks are coming off a three-game sweep of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith over the weekend. During that contest, the McM starting pitchers all chipped in with quality starts as each earned a win. Chase Moreland went 6.1 innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Spencer Smith bettered that performance by going 7.1 innings while allowing just one earned run and seven hits. Aaron Burns then followed that performance with a 6.0 inning outing where he gave up zero earned runs and six hits while setting down seven Lions.

Offensively, Ruben Zendejas went 5-for-10 in the lead-off role and Cody Howard knocked in three RBI as they War Hawks won all three games by scores of 5-4, 3-2 and 3-1, respectively.

Oklahoma Christian is coming off back-to-back losses at the hands of Central Oklahoma and Bacone. In the Eagles 3-1 loss to Bacone, OC managed just four hits, with two coming off the bat of Blake Stringer.

With Jon Mejia likely sidelined the rest of the season, Zendejas has become the offensive leader, hitting .303 on the year. Ricky Garcia has become the War Hawks leading RBI man with 16 on the year and Eric Mortiz is right behind him, having driven in 14 so far. Dylan De Leon is the team leader in hits with 37.

Against Heartland Conference opponents this season, the War Hawks are 16-14. On the mound against the Heartland Conference, Burns has been stellar. The freshman has posted a 5-1 record and a 1.56 ERA over nine starts against conference foes. He has allowed just 10 earned runs over 57.2 innings of work, while striking out 48.

So far this season, the Eagles are being led by Dillon Andrews' .375 batting average. Andrews is also one of four batters on the team with 17 RBI and leads the Eagles with 39 hits, and a .538 slugging percentage.

On the mound, OC boasts a team ERA of 3.83. Reliever Chris Burgess has been a bright spot on the staff. Through 20.1 innings of relief work, Burgess is 4-0 with a 0.89 ERA in 14 appearances.

This will be the second meeting of the season between the War Hawks and Eagles. Oklahoma Christian took the first game in Oklahoma City by a score of 13-2. In that contest, the Eagles received two RBI from three different players, and a complete game, one earned run performance by Tyler Sturgess.

The contest between the War Hawks and Eagles will be a nine-inning game that is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Walt Driggers Field.
