DALLAS, Texas – It took two overtimes and 102 minutes, but the McMurry University men's soccer team defeated Dallas Baptist University by a score of 2-1 on Thursday evening.
Desmond Williams was the hero of the day for the War Hawks as he scored both goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, to give McM the win.
The Patriots got on the board first as Matthew Steffens connected on his second goal of the season to give DBU the 1-0 lead. The teams would go into the half with the same score.
It took until the 73
rd minute for Williams to notch his first goal of the game as he received a pass from
Colin Lund and buried the ball in the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1 and send the teams into overtime.
It was in the second overtime that Williams struck again. On a cross by
Mike Moon, Williams got his head on the ball to score his second goal of the game, and third of the season to give the War Hawks their second victory of the season.
"It was a great hard fight," said head coach
Paul Tate. "We played as a team that whole way and finished the game strong to take the victory."
Williams, a Dallas native making his first hometown appearance in a War Hawks uniform, led McMurry with the two goals and four points on the day. The two goals made Williams the new points leader for the War Hawks. Lund and Moon also notched points on the day with an assist, apiece.
The War Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University. The contest is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. kick-off.
