War Hawks Top Southwestern, 11-7

GEORGETOWN, Texas – McMurry University scored eight runs in the first three innings and never looked back in an 11-7, non-conference win over Southwestern University at Rockwell Field. The win improved the War Hawks to 18-16 overall.

McM scored four runs in the first and third innings, which would prove to be enough runs for the afternoon. The War Hawks added solo runs in the fourth fifth and ninth innings.

Second baseman Marcellous Biggins had the big game for McMurry. The senior was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. He also drew a pair of walks and scored twice. His big blow was a three-run homer in the McM four-run first.

Matt Thompson, McM's three-time ASC “Hitter of the Week honoree, kept his hot bat going with a 3-for-5 effort against the Pirates, including a leadoff triple in the ninth. Thompson scored three times and drove in one run.

Leadoff batter Ruben Zendejas, designated hitter Hunter Lane and catcher Bradd Baker each went 2-for-4. Lane and Baker each scored twice and had one RBI.

McMurry starter Jordan Mattke – the first the War Hawks' four-person “committee” taking the mound for the non-league contest – picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings of work. Mattke improved to 2-1.

McMurry out-hit the Pirates by a 15-9 margin.

The War Hawks return to ASC action at home on Friday evening (7 p.m.) versus West Division leader Concordia-Texas. The three-game series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader.
