McMurry Drops Two at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team suffered its first American Southwest Conference West Division losses of the season, dropping a doubleheader at Texas Lutheran University, 2-1 and 6-3, at Katt-Isbel Field.

The setbacks dropped the War Hawks to 12-14 overall and 7-2 in the ASC West.

In game one, the Bulldogs scored single runs in the second and fourth innings. The runs scored on a hit batter and wild pitch by starter Zach Matthys (3-4). Matthys lasted 3 2/3 innings, walked six and struck out one. He allowed just three hits.

Caleb Gonzales pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, permitting one hit, to keep the War Hawks close.

Senior Matt Thompson had an RBI single in the sixth – plating Brian Durst – for McM's lone run. Thompson, Durst and third baseman Nick Marsh all went 2-for-3 in the game and accounted for six of the team's seven hits.

In the second game, McMurry starter Jacob Dentoni (2-2) opened with two scoreless innings before the roof fell in during the third when TLU tallied five times. The big blow was a grand slam home run by the Bulldogs' Klaus Bohrmann.

In the top of the fourth, Marsh hit a solo homer to cut the deficit to 5-1. TLU got the run back in the bottom of the fifth, 6-1, ending Dentoni's day after 4 2/3 innings.

The War Hawks added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it 6-3, but could get no closer.

McM reliever Charlie Hejny had another quality relief appearance. Hejny went 3 1/3, allowed just two hits and no runs. He had five strikeouts and one walk.

Marsh was 2-for-4, with a pair of runs, as the only McM player with more than one hit.
