SEGUIN, Texas – The McMurry women's basketball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end, dropping a road American Southwest Conference contest at Texas Lutheran University, 73-58. It was the first loss for the War Hawks (15-6, 13-4 ASC) since January 12.
McMurry's pressing defense in the first half generated numerous turnovers by the Bulldogs. But TLU's shooting from long range kept them in the game. The hosts were 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the opening period ad led by as much as five (27-22)
After McM battled back, the two teams went into the locker room knotted at 28-28.
TLU began to pull away midway through the second half. At the 10:43 juncture, the Bulldogs had matched their five-point cushion from the opening period and, with 3:49 remaining had built a double-digit lead, 60-50.
The War Hawks got the deficit down to seven in the waning moments, but could get no closer. The 15-point loss was the team's second-worst defeat of the season (behind only the team's 71-39 loss at NCAA II Tarleton State).
Rikeita Thomas led the McMurry team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Celeste Belizario was the team's only other double-figure scorer with 13 points.
Keshia Collins was held below double digits for just the second time this season, tallying nine points and two blocks.
TLU was forced into 24 turnovers for the game by McMurry's defensive pressure. However, on offense the War Hawks shot just 28 percent (18-64) for the game from the field.
