ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons will host five American Southwest Conference opponents in the ASC Dig Pink Crossover volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday at the Abilene schools' respective sites. Three matches will be held each day at McMurry's Kimbrell Arena and Hardin-Simmons' Mabee Complex.
The War Hawks (14-0, 5-0) and Cowgirls (11-2, 5-0) enter the tournament as the top two teams from the ASC West Division as hosts while Howard Payne and Concordia-Texas join the pair to face east division schools Centenary (5-5, 0-0), East Texas Baptist (4-9, 1-4), and Mississippi College (4-7, 3-1).
McMurry will play host to Centenary Friday at Noon, East Texas Baptist Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Mississippi College Saturday at 2 p.m. HSU will play host to Mississippi College Friday at Noon, Centenary College Friday at 5 p.m., and East Texas Baptist Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Centenary is a first-year Division III school in the ASC transitioning from the Division I Summit League. The Ladies are 5-5 on the season and are 2-5 against ASC members. They are led by Shelby Singleton, she has recorded 147 kills with a .502 hitting percentage, and 49 blocks. As a team the Ladies carry a hitting percentage of .223. East Texas Baptist brings a 4-8 overall record and a 1-3 record in ASC play into the crossover event. ETBU is hitting .153 as a team; Kerri Kalina leads the team with 97 kills and Nicole Vanderlaan leads the team with 200 digs defensively. The Choctaws of Mississippi College come to the crossover event carrying a 6-7 record and a 3-1 record in ASC play. As a team the Choctaws are hitting .149 led by Rachel Farmer; she has recorded 87 kills while hitting .202 for the season. Holly Tupper has recording 171 digs on the season.
Howard Payne is hitting .156 as a team led by Tamika Heline's 156 kills while Kristin Hammond leads the YellowJackets with 226 digs. HPU enters with a 5-8 overall record and a 1-4 league record. The Tornados of Concordia-Texas carry a 5-6 overall record and a 2-4 league record into the tournament with Kalynn White's 109 kills leading their offensive charge while the team hits .133 on the year. Kevyn Jackson leads CTX defensively with 187 digs and Emma Clifford has 21 total blocks.
Hardin-Simmons enters with the momentum of a perfect ASC record at 5-0 with Madison Reyes' 169 kills leading the Cowgirls. The team hits .190 and defensively Christine Sas leads HSU with 158 digs and Tori Martinez has tallied 37 total blocks.
McMurry will look to extend its perfect 14-0 start this weekend. Four War Hawks have at least 90 kills with
M.J. Vickers leading with 164; five players have at least 200 digs with
Bailey Marcum leading with 209;
Kasi Conners leads McMurry's blocking effort with 69 total blocks and McMurry is allowing a conference-low .090 hitting percentage. Offensively, McMurry is hitting a league best .268.
In addition to the 12 matches, the ASC Dig Pink Crossover is set to raise awareness for breast cancer.
McMurry is providing free live stats for all matches on site while Hardin-Simmons is providing free live video. Tickets at Kimbrell Arena are $5 for adults and $3 for students/seniors; tickets are good for a day pass; no tournament passes will be sold.
