ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's match win streak went to 12 Friday night when the War Hawks swept Texas Lutheran for the first time in school history at Kimbrell Arena with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-13. McMurry also moved to 4-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the league victory.
McMurry used a balanced hitting attack with a .219 hitting percentage, and
M.J. Vickers had nine kills while
Stephanie Henry had eight. Defensively, McMurry dominated with 10 blocks and held the Bulldogs to a .073 hitting percentage.
Kasi Conners had seven total blocks including two solos to lead the War Hawks defense.
The War Hawks began playing Texas Lutheran in 2001 and had never took a match against the Bulldogs in three sets prior to Friday night. McMurry's previous best start to a season was 7-0 in 2007.
The first set saw five ties and two lead changes. With the score knotted at four, Vickers recorded a kill on a set from
Demi Holladay an 8-1 run. McMurry did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set, but the Bulldogs fought back to tie the score at 22.
The second set was nip and tuck, and TLU tried to regain the momentum, however, McMurry came away with the victory. TLU took its first lead in the second set at 12-11 when McMurry committed a ball-handling error. The game continued with the see-saw battle, and with score knotted at 24, the War Hawks scored two-straight points to take the set.
McMurry trounced on the Bulldogs on the third set ending the match with an 11-3 run. Vickers had six of her team-high nine kills in the final set to help lead the home team in front of 500 fans.
Conners' seven blocks moved her season total to 56 and she also added five kills on the night.
Bailey Marcum added five blocks, six kills and a team high 10 digs.
Jasmine Qualls and
Demi Holladay both recorded double-digit assists match recording 18 and 13 respectively.
The War Hawks will look to continue their winning streak Saturday at Noon when the team plays host to Schreiner University. The Bulldogs fell to 6-7 overall and moved to 3-1 in league play.
