War Hawks off to best start in school history at 8-0

SHERMAN, Texas – The 2011 McMurry University volleyball team officially has the fastest start in school history after the War Hawks picked up wins over Dallas Christian and Austin College to begin the season at 8-0. The previous mark for best start belonged to the 2007 squad when McMurry started 7-0.

For the second-straight week McMurry swept through a four-match tournament; this time the War Hawks took a win over NCAA Division II Ouachita Baptist and Texas College Friday before Saturday's historic victories.

McMurry defeated Dallas Christian 25-10, 25-13, 25-8 hitting .267 on the way to 7-0. Stephanie Henry led the War Hawks with eight kills while M.J. Vickers had six.

The War Hawks then defeated Austin College in four sets; the 'Roos were an NCAA Tournament team in 2010. However, McMurry took a 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 victory. Bailey Marcum had 18 kills and 29 digs while Vickers posted a double-double as well with 16 kills and 16 digs apiece.

McMurry hit. 218 with Jasmine Qualls pacing that effort with 27 assists and Demi Holladay added 21.

The War Hawks begin American Southwest Conference competition Tuesday in Brownwood with a match against Howard Payne at 7 p.m.
