SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Trinity University jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for an 8-5 win over McMurry University Tuesday at the Trinity Baseball Field. Dylan Early drove in two runs for the Tigers and the top three batters in the lineup for Trinity all drove in runs to key the victory.
The Tigers scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second and followed in the third with a solo home run by Kyle Felix to give Trinity a 4-0 advantage. The War Hawks countered with three runs in the top of the fourth when
Dylan De Leon scored on a wild pitch while
Brian Durst and
Matt Thompson each drove home runs with sacrifice flies.
However, John Paillet extended the lead to two runs with a squeeze bunt that scored a run in the bottom half of the fourth and the Tigers added two more in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Kevin Calbick and Early scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3. Early's RBI single gave the Tigers a four-run lead before McMurry's remaining rally came in the eighth when
Greg Guse's RBI single cut the lead to three for the final run of the ball game.
Noah Solomon picked up the win in relief for Trinity to move to 4-1 on the season. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four. Chris Maldanado was charged with the loss for the visiting War Hawks as he allowed four runs on five hits in a starting role to fall to 1-1.
Trinity improve to 26-8 on the season while McMurry fell to 8-20. The War Hawks return to action Friday and Saturday in Brownwood with a three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series with Howard Payne.
