PLAINVIEW, Texas – McMurry University dropped a 14-3 decision to Wayland Baptist Tuesday in non-conference action to fall to 2-8 on the season. The Pioneers scored multiple runs in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings while keeping its visitors scoreless through six innings to aide in the victory.
WBU belted three home runs in the game including a grand slam from Ben Christian in the third inning. Gabe Sandersius pitched six scoreless innings allowing just four McMurry hits to pick up the victory on the mound. Sandersius moved to 1-1 on the season while
Zach Matthys picked up the loss for McMurry to move to 0-1.
Matthys allowed six runs in 2.2 innings,
Logan Edge relieved and allowed three runs in one inning of work, and
Eric Cantrell finished the game with 4.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen. Cantrell struck out a team-high seven batters in relief, but allowed five hits and five runs in relief.
McMurry's Zach Rossman hit his second home run of the season and joined
Andrew Bell as the only McMurry hitters to have more than one hit. McMurry left 10 runners on base and collected nine hits as a team in the loss.
Kevin Hennessey added his eighth home run of the season, collected three hits and drove in four runs while Nic Shadle had a solo homer for the Pioneers as well to help WBU improve to 10-10 on the season.
McMurry plays host to American Southwest Conference East Division foe Mississippi College Friday and Saturday for a 3-game set. Friday the teams play a single game at 7 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Choctaws enter the series with a 3-6 record.
