ALPINE, Texas – The place was already set for McMurry University for the American Southwest Conference postseason tournament next week as the No. 3 west division seed, however, the team went on the road to end the regular season on a positive note and defeated Sul Ross State 73-50 at the Gallego Center Saturday.
Five players scored in double figures for McMurry with
M.J. Vickers and
Keshia Collins leading the way with 13 apiece.
Erica Rawls scored a dozen and
Anna Berthel and
Andi Lukaszewski each had 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
McMurry shot 37 percent from the field but out-rebounded the Lobos 56-31 and kept Sul Ross State at a 31-percent shooting effort to aide in the victory. In the losing effort both Candace Pollard and Madalyn Lopez each scored a dozen points.
Sul Ross State led 11-5 at one point in the game, but after the score was tied at 14, McMurry took the lead for good on a jumper by
Rikeita Thomas with 10:10 remaining. From there, McMurry led by 12 points at halftime by a score of 37-25.
Berthel's four blocks gave her 75 on the season, which leaves her five blocks shy of the single-season record of 80 set by Tarra Richardson in the 2005-06 season. She'll have at least one more game this season to try and tie or break the record as McMurry heads to Brownwood for the conference tournament hosted by Howard Payne. McMurry will take on the No. 2 east division seed with the tournament field to be set Sunday night.
McMurry improved to 16-9 overall while improving to 14-7 in league play while the Lobos fell to 1-24 overall and 1-20 in league play.
