ABILENE, Texas – McMurry extended its winning streak to seven as the team beat the Mary Hardin-Baylor 69-39 in American Southwest Conference action Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena. McMurry out rebounded the Crusaders 57-22 on its way to the victory.
McMurry remains in a second-place tie with Howard Payne with a 13-6 league record, and both teams trail Hardin-Simmons by one game for the right to host the ASC Postseason Tournament Feb. 24-26.
M.J. Vickers led all players with 16 points and 12 boards on the way to her first career double-double. All 12 of Vickers rebounds came on the offensive side of the ball.
Keshia Collins recorded 13 points in the contest with
Andi Lukaszewski adding 11.
All five McMurry seniors played in the contest on senior day in the final regular season home game.
Anna Berthel finished with nine points and 11 rebounds while
Jordan Stansell had two points, two steals and five rebounds.
Erica Rawls,
Precious Williams and
Jennifer Wells also each played in their final regular season home contest in a McMurry uniform.
McMurry jumped out early to take control and never trailed. The home team began with a 7-0 run capped off by a Berthel bucket from the paint with 16:55 remaining in the first half. McMurry's biggest lead of the contest of 35 points came when Lukaszewski hit a three point bucket with 5:07 to make the score 66-31.
The tenacious defense of McMurry allowed only seven field goals for the Crusaders and UMHB finished just 11 of 44 from the floor. The rebounding category was just as dominant for McMurry as 30 of the team's 57 rebounds came on the offensive end, which McMurry turned into 29 second-chance points. UMHB on the other side recorded just 22 rebounds with seven on the offensive side.
McMurry shot 36 percent from the floor and hit seven 3-point field goals.
With two games to spare, McMurry will take to the road to face Howard Payne Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Brownwood followed by a contest in Alpine Saturday against Sul Ross State at 1 p.m.
