War Hawks reach 20-win mark for first time since 2004, take three matches at ASC Crossover

TYLER, Texas – McMurry University posted a 3-1 record at Friday and Saturday's American Southwest Conference Crossover Challenge on the campus of UT-Tyler. McMury defeated the hosts, UT-Tyler Friday while taking down LeTourneau and Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday.

UT-Dallas took a five-set win over McMurry Friday. The War Hawks improved to 20-2 overall and 10-2 in league play. McMurry has now guaranteed its first winning season since 2004.

Below is a recap of each match from this weekend's crossover.

Saturday

McMurry def. LeTourneau 25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17

The War Hawks hit .259 in a four-set victory over the YellowJackets. M.J. Vickers and Bailey Marcum each had 13 kills and Stephanie Henry added a dozen in the victory.

McMurry's defense held LeTourneau to just a .096 hitting percentage. Kasi Conners recorded six total blocks while Bailey Wilson had 15 digs. Jasmine Qualls posted a double-double with 15 digs and 15 assists.

McMurry def. Mary Hardin-Baylor 25-21, 25-16, 27-29, 21-25, 15-12

McMurry jumped out to a two-set lead but Mary Hardin-Baylor fought back to force a fifth and deciding set. However, McMurry held on for the victory with a 15-12 mark in the final set.

Stephanie Henry and M.J. Vickers each recorded season-highs for McMurry with 20 kills apiece, and the War Hawks hit .254 as a squad. Bailey Marcum had 15 kills and Kasi Conners had 10 kills and eight blocks.

Bailey Wilson had a career-high 29 digs and McMurry out-blocked UMHB 10-3. In the losing effort, Kaydie Cochran had 20 kills for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Friday

UT-Dallas def. McMurry 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14

A see-saw battle ended in favor of UT-Dallas as the Comets improved to 13-3 on the season and 9-1 in conference play. McMurry dropped the second of its last three matches to fall to 18-2 overall and 8-2 in league play.

Bailey Marcum and M.J. Vickers each had 14 kills in the losing effort with Stephanie Henry adding a dozen. In addition the War Hawks added 14 total blocks, but UT-Dallas proved to be too much in the end.

Dana Hilzendager had a match-high 19 kills while Hillary Baugh added 14 and Chrisna Murphy and Taylour Toso each had 11 for UT-Dallas.

In the deciding set, UT-Dallas never trailed but saw the score knotted at 10, 11 and 14. However, with the score 14-14, Hilzendager recorded two-straight kills to seal the victory for the Comets.

McMurry def. UT-Tyler 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22

UT-Tyler took the first set, but McMurry bounced back and took a 3-1 victory over the Patriots. M.J. Vickers and Bailey Marcum had 12 and 10 kills respectively to lead the War Hawks.

McMurry hit .199 and held the Patriots to a .172 hitting percentage. Defensively the War Hawks out-blocked UT-Tyler 11-5 with Kasi Conners tallying seven total blocks. Bailey Wilson had 27 digs while Bailey Marcum had 16 and M.J. Vickers added 14.

In the losing effort the Patriots' Danika Waldrep had 12 kills and 15 digs.
