McMurry drops to fifth place in ASC West with loss to UMHB

BELTON, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor flip-flopped with McMurry University in the American Southwest Conference West Division standings with a 64-58 victory Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB moved into fourth place and improved to 7-6 in league play while McMurry dropped its third game in the last four contests.

The ASC Postseason Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 25-27 and takes the top four teams from each division. The Lady Crusaders moved themselves into position by leading for the final 32:31 of the contest. Landie Thompson scored a first-half bucket with 13:29 to play in the first half to take an 11-10 lead and UMHB never looked back.

Andi Lukasewski hit a jumper with 12:44 left in the first half to cut the Crusaders' lead to one at 13-12. However, McMurry went 4:43 without a field goal following the bucket and the Crusaders built a 21-12 lead. UMHB scored the final five points of the first half to take a 37-28 lead into halftime.

The Crusaders led by as many as 15 points on two different occasions in the final period. McMurry closed the game with a 14-5 run in the final 5:14, however, time ran out before the comeback could be completed.

Thompson and Brittany Zamora scored 14 points apiece to lead UMHB, and the home team shot 43 percent from the field and connected on 16 of 19 free-throw attempts. McMurry's Anna Berthel had 17 points and Tory Salazar had 15 points in the loss. However, McMurry shot just 35 percent from the field and the Crusaders' bench outscored McMurry 24-7.

UMHB improved to 10-7 overall while McMurry fell to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in league play. McMurry returns to action Thursday against Schreiner at 5:30 p.m.
