Texas Lutheran outlasts McMurry in five sets

ABILENE, Texas – Texas Lutheran came up on the winning end of a see-saw battle Friday night and went on for a 19-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory over McMurry in American Southwest Conference West Division play at Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry appeared to be in control of the match after a first-set win, then in the second set with the lead 24-21, McMurry's Mandie Moore appeared to have blocked Sarah Black's attack attempt to the floor on TLU's side. Both teams began to switch benches before the official called a blocking error on Moore, which was contested by McMurry head coach Cammie Petree. From there, the Lady Bulldogs scored six out of
the last seven points to even the match at one set apiece.

McMurry fought back in set three before TLU jumped out to a dominating 12-3 start in set four. After building a 10-point lead at 19-9, McMurry rallied to cut the score to four at 22-18 in favor of TLU. However, the Bulldogs scored three of the last four points in the set to knot the match again at two sets apiece.

McMurry took a 3-2 lead in the final set, but the Lady Bulldogs' went ahead 4-3 on two-straight attack errors and took the lead for good.

TLU's Jessica Stetler and Black each had 17 kills apiece and Marcia Sagebiel added a dozen. The Lady Bulldogs' defense halted McMurry after the home team hit above .200 for the first three sets. However, McMurry hit just .050 in the fourth set and hit a negative -.042 in the final set.

The Bulldogs finished with a .173 hitting percentage and McMurry had a .152. In the losing effort, Bennie Smith had 13 kills, Bailey Marcum and Terah Brown each had a dozen and M.J. Vickers had 11. Sarah Anding had 21 digs to lead McMurry and Marcum had a double-double with 16 digs.

Texas Lutheran improved to 3-5 overall and evened its record to 1-1 in league play while McMurry fell to 4-5 overall and fell to 1-1.

McMurry takes on Concordia-Texas at Noon Saturday in Kimbrell Arena.
