BELTON, Texas – Chris Joshlin hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon at Red Murff Field to help Mary Hardin-Baylor take an 8-7 victory and two games out of the three-game American Southwest Conference West Division Series.
McMurry led 6-0 to begin the game thanks to a four-run first and a two-run third inning. However, beginning with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, UMHB outscored McMurry 8-1 in the final five at bats to improve to 11-11 overall and 3-3 in ASC West Division Play. With the loss, McMurry falls to 8-13 overall and 2-4 in league play.
In the first,
Derek Saltzgaber drove in two runs with a single,
Jeff Jackson drove home a run with a single and
Michael Falcone had an RBI groundout to give the visitors an early 4-0 advantage.
Then, in the third,
Kory Moench singled home
Matt Thompson and
Jeff Jackson also came around to score on the play as a result of an error on the throw from leftfield.
McMurry starter
Zack Hewitt recorded two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning before Ryan Moreau reached on an error to extend the inning for UMHB. As a result, the Crusaders scored three runs to cut the lead to 6-3.
Jake Mullin hit a run-scoring single for McMurry in the top of the sixth to extend McMurry's lead back to four, but UMHB responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one.
Again in the bottom of the eighth, the Crusaders scored on an error to knot the score at seven when
Michael Dibiasi's error in the field allowed for Seth Lynn to score on a single by Moreau that should have kept Lynn at third.
In the top of the ninth, McMurry had two runners on base with one out but could score and UMHB's Kyle Flynn scored the winning run on Joshlin's fly ball to centerfield. McMurry reliever
Chris Semchenko picked up the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season while reliever Adrian Montoya recorded his first win of the season for UMHB to move to 1-2.
The two teams split a doubleheader Friday before the rubber match was moved back to Sunday following inclement weather Saturday.
McMurry will play host to Trinity University Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Walt Driggers Field.
