Box Score
ABILENE, Texas -
Amanda Peters scored 11 points in her final game at Kimbrell Arena as the senior helped lead a balanced scoring effort to help McMurry University defeat Schreiner 61-38 Saturday afternoon. Peters was perfect from the free-throw line hitting all six attempts, and she had three assists and three steals in her 75th career start.
McMurry never trailed, built a 15-point lead at halftime and led by as many as 26 to pick up its 16th win of the season heading into the American Southwest Conference Tournament Thursday in Pineville, La.
The McMurry defense limited Schreiner to just a 33-percent shooting effort and the Mountaineers were only able to get to the free-throw line seven times. McMurry, on the other hand shot 36 percent and hit 17 of 20 free-throw attempts.
As has been the story all season long, McMurry took advantage of opponent turnovers; this time the home team scored 32 points off 29 Mountaineer turnovers. In addition, the starters received limited playing time as McMurry's fate of the third seed from the ASC West Division had already been set in Thursday's win over Texas Lutheran for the ASC Tournament. The reserves for McMurry responded with 31 points and all 15 players played a minimum of five minutes in the game.
LaPorsha Alexander had 13 points and five rebounds to lead McMurry off the bench,
Jordan Stansell had nine points and
Rikeita Thomas and
Erica Rawls each had six points.
Schreiner's Mercedes Corona had 13 points and three 3-point field goals while Megan Novosad had 12 points off the bench in the losing effort.
Though Peters has the ASC Tournament to play, she is among the career leaders in school history in games played with 112. She has become one of the conference's best defenders and as a senior is averaging career-highs in points, rebounds and 3-point field goal percentage.
The Lady Mountaineers finished the season at 1-24 overall and 1-20 in conference play. McMurry will take on the No. 2 seed from the east division, UT-Dallas, in the quarterfinals round of the conference tournament hosted by Louisiana College; times have not yet been determined.
