ABILENE, Texas – UT-Dallas' Amy Doyle made two free throws to break a 52-52 tie with 48 seconds left in the game and the visitors held on to beat McMurry 54-52 in American Southwest Conference play Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
McMurry nearly mounted a great comeback to knock off its second-straight undefeated opponent. After trailing 41-24, McMurry scored nine-straight points to cut the lead to eight at 41-33. Then, the home team went on to continue the surge completing a 21-3 run to knot the score at 44 after a pair of free throws from
Anna Berthel. Eventually, the score was tied at 52 before Doyle's final free throws would be the final scores of the game.
Keshia Collins scored 16 points off the bench to lead McMurry in scoring for the second-straight game. The freshman from Midland was 7 of 8 from the free throw line, and Berthel added a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Comets had three players in double figures with Tarneisha Scott leading the way with 15 points and six boards. Lyndesey Smith had 10 points and Doyle finished with 11 off the bench.
McMurry finished the game at 34 percent from the field after just a 23 percent effort in the first half. The home team finished 17 of 50 from the floor and shot 81 percent from the charity stripe hitting 17 of 21 shots.
UT-Dallas shot 34 percent from the field as well on a 16 of 47 from the floor, but the Comets matched McMurry's impressive free-throw performance by hitting 18 of 22 shots at the line.
UT-Dallas will remain undefeated on the season 7-0 overall and 5-0 in ASC play. The loss evens McMury at 3-3 and 2-2 respectively McMurry will face off against cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons University Dec, 14 at 5:30 p.m. at HSU.
