GREENSBORO, N.C. – McMurry University's second game will likely be more challenging than its first. After an 82-25 victory over Barclay College Monday night, McMurry turns its attention to No. 19-ranked Guilford College in the Quakers' home gym Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Quakers have made two-straight trips to the NCAA Division III Final Four and three consecutive trips to the national tournament. Guilford finished a 30-3 overall record last season and posted a 14-2 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference where the Quakers also won the ODAC Tournament Championship. Guilford was ranked No. 19 in both the NABCA and D3hoops.com Preseason polls after their outstanding season.
The Quakers lose the reigning NCAA Division III Player of the Year in Tyler Sanborn and their other two top scorers from last season to graduation, but return seniors Martin Stephenson and T.C. Anderson who averaged 6.6 and four points per game respectively. Guilford enters the contest at 1-1 with a loss to Greensboro College and a win over Methodist College. Sophomore guard Austin Pittman averages 18 points a game through two contests.
McMurry emptied its bench Monday night in the win over Barclay, but
Teddy Chambers and
Alfred Perez each scored 10 points apiece and recorded double-doubles.
The winner of Friday night's game will face Friday's winner of the Emory vs. Averett game Saturday at 5 p.m. while the consolation game will be played at 3 p.m. Gullford will provide live stats and live video for all four games.
