Box Score

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry used four touchdown passes from Jake Mullin and the first kickoff returned for a touchdown in the 84-year history of football at the school to defeat Sul Ross State 35-12 at Jackson Field. Junior cornerback D.J. Baiza's 93-yard kickoff return for a score was the first ever for a program that began in 1923.

The Lobos took a 6-0 lead on B.J. Vickers' 3-yard touchdown catch from Terrance Young with 4:20 left in the first quarter. Desmond Baker blocked the extra point, and on the ensuing kickoff Baiza fielded the ball at the McMurry 7-yard line in the middle of the field. He took the ball to midfield before cutting towards the McMurry sideline and shook off Lobo kicker Brian Vasquez's shoestring tackle attempt inside the 10-yard line, kept his footing and scampered in for the score. Jesse Garcia's extra-point attempt was good and gave McMurry a 7-6 advantage, which it would never surrender.

Mullin tossed two touchdown scores to Josh Chatman, one to Austin Brooks, and his third of four touchdown passes in the game went to R.J. Long marking Mullin's 50th career touchdown pass in just 15 games. For Long, it was his seventh consecutive game with a touchdown catch tying Rory Peacock for the school record (since joining the NCAA in 1996) for most consecutive games with a touchdown reception at seven games.

The freshman, Brooks, in his second start at running back broke the 100-yard mark with 108 yards on 19 carries to accompany his touchdown reception.

The Lobos were the first team in 2010 to gain more than 300 yards of total offense on McMurry's defense, which ranked No. 7 in the nation entering into the contest. Sul Ross had only six plays over 10 yards, but McMurry gave up the big play including two rushes of 87 and 77 yards respectively by Young and Randy Owens respectively. Ownes finished with 136 yards rushing and Young had 89 to help Sul Ross reach 350 yards of total offense.

Josh McKinnis had nine tackles for McMurry including two for a loss while Austin Cleere and Will Morris each had eight. McMury tallied 12 tackles for a loss, three sacks and three interceptions. Baiza added an interception along with his milestone special teams touchdown while Desmond Baker and David Boyd each had picks as well.

Mullin finished with 252 yards passing completing 20 of 37 attempts. He moved his season's total to 26 touchdown passes and just one interception.

McMury improved to 4-2 on the season overall and moved to 2-2 in American Southwest Conference play while Sul Ross State dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
